Please note that this unit is retailed at the veterinary market and is primarliy sold for use on Canines.

Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy (PMFT) has been around for almost 50 years now in various forms. It is important not to confuse or associate PMFT with magnetic bandages, etc.. Magnetic bandages produce a weak static magnetic field which, according to research performed in the U.K., appears to have little if any therapeutic value.

PMFT equipment generates magnetic fields which are pulsed at different rates. By changing the frequency of these pulses you can stimulate different reactions within the body. Lower frequencies 1 - 12Hz help to reduce swelling, relax muscles whilst also stimulating repair. Higher frequencies 17 - 50Hz increase blood flow and stimulate more rapid injury repair. There have been numerous investigations into PMFT and various medical research papers have been published on the subject.

General:
Phototherapy - the Phototherapy side of the model MP-9 is basically the same as the Laser equipment which is marketed to trainers. We refer to this equipment as Phototherapy because these units, ours included, strictly speaking are not Lasers. A Laser is a device which generates a parallel beam of light. The emitters used in therapeutic "Laser" units typically have around 10% divergence. 10% of the beam will spread out once it leaves the emitter and it is therefore wrong to call this type of unit a Laser, we prefer to call it Phototherapy or light therapy. True laser diodes are very expensive and the diodes used in most units are Super Luminous Diodes, which are quite effective and much less costly.

The operating manual gives all the necessary information for treatment schedules, but following is a brief outline of what PMFT can do.

It can be used to treat practically all injuries, from soft tissue swelling, strains and tears through to bone problems from simple soreness to fractures. There is nothing more effective for stimulating fracture repair than PMFT, it can reduce healing times by up to 60% and give a better repair as well. Even problems like arthritis can be effectively managed with regular treatment.

Ultrasound is faster in stimulating repair of soft tissue injuries, but it should not be used in swollen areas and only the specific areas treated benefit. When using the large applicator with PMFT the whole suspect area around the injury site is treated and any small niggling spots are taken care of at the same time. It should be noted that ultrasound can be applied at the same time s PMFT. The 2 units combine very well, the ultrasound fixing the major obvious injuries and the PMFT taking care of the smaller ones that can take half a length off a animal.

Phototherapy is effective in treating very shallow problems like tendons in the wrist and foot and for treating cuts and abrasions. It cannot penetrate more than about 1 to 1.5 cm and is no good for treating larger muscles.

Note: Photo-therapy is a form of laser therapy and the same precautions should be observed when in use as for Class 111B Laser equipment. Its use is solely at the purchaser's discretion.

PHOTO-THERAPY (SIMULATED LASER) SUPPLEMENT (PTA-4)
The TGS Model MP-9 Pulsed Magnetic Field therapy unit is designed to drive a Photo-Therapy (Simulated Laser) applicator which consists of 2 x Visible Red ultra-bright Aluminium Gallium Arsenide emitters and 2 x Invisible Infra-red Gallium Arsenide emitters.
Internal modifications to the pulsed magnetic field therapy circuit utilise the Base Frequency 50 and 200Hz facility which is used for normal magnetic therapy settings. Additional circuitry amplifies and feeds these signals to a separate photo-therapy output socket for use with the photo-therapy applicator. The pulse-rate selector on the treatment control panel is, therefore, non-effectice when using the photo-therapy applicator socket, but the 50/200Hz base frequency selector is still active.

Application frequencies of the visible and invisible emiters act upon the surface of the skin for visible red; and just beneath the skin for infra-red. The photo-biological effect is both to gently raise the temperature in the treatment area which in turn causes vaso-dilation of of blood capillaries; and to stimulate the epithelial cells. The increased blood flow and stimulation in these areas speeds up the repair of lesions and injuries, bruising, etc.. Weeping wounds will be assisted to dry up more quickly by the application of the photo-therapy light.

The applicator is designed to to focus the 4 beams onto a single point. This is achieved by holding the applicator head approximately 1 inch (2.5 cms) from the surface of the treatment area. For new injuries the 200Hz frequency setting should be used. For follow-up treatment after healing has been established, the 50Hz setting should be used. The recommended treatment duration is approximately 5 minutes, moving the beams backwards and forwards over the area under treatment.
Whilst using this device you should wear Laser goggles with green lenses (not supplied)
